Nose

Roasted peanuts, cinnamon and red chilli flakes, blackcurrant and Port.

Palate

Sea salt and kippers, dark chocolate, sultanas, a touch of cantaloupe.

Finish

Barley, dry smoke and pepper.

Round and soft but full of character.

I didn't know quite what to expect from this, having no memory of ever drinking any Bunnahabhain before. It is unmistakably an Islay malt with the classic nose one expects but it has none of the thin astringency you find in a young Laphroaig or Bruichladdich. This is richer, more floral and expansive. But it is also persuasive, Softer and more interesting to the mouth. We tasted this side-by-side with Uigeadail and we found the Ardbeg almost a gauche bully in comparison. I will be buying another Bunnahabhain in the near future. P. S. We mixed Uigeadail and Toiteach a Dha about 50/50. This was absolutely wonderful!

Decent young peated Bunna

Not mega peated but a nice level. Definitely youthful and at full price would opt for something like a Ledaig 10 instead which is rather more rounded than this. A bargain at the current sale price though.

Harks back to the peated 10 year old.

A lovely drop. Reminiscent of the old Bunnahabhain 10yo. Takes me back 30 years. Delicious.

Tasty for those that like smoke

This is a peated whisky for people who prefer smoke to the earthy aspect of peat. It doesn't have that same peaty funk that you get with Laphroaig. It's more the burnt out fire on the pebble beach than the burnt out fire on the damp grassy cliff top.
