Single Malt
Bunnahabhain
Scotland
An immensely impressive 21-year-old single malt from Bunnahabhain! Fully matured on Islay, the unpeated whisky spent the majority of its time in oloroso sherry casks, before a 21-month finish in Pedro Ximénez casks. Tasty, tasty stuff this.
Syrupy honey and milk bottle sweets cushion robust oak, giving way to notes of almond sponge, browned butter, guava, and the syrup from tinned pineapples. Date molasses rides throughout, with juicy sultanas, dried orange peels, and hints of dried cranberry bringing suggestions of a Manhattan.
Big but round, with waves of red fruits and stewed stone fruits bringing superb balance to tannic, leathery oak. Candied pecans and maple syrup soon follow, joined by mixed fruit and nuts, and a dusting of cocoa.
Soft, venerable oak, walnut, slightest hint of marshmallow, cassis, and more maple.
This Bunnahabhain 21yo is a rich, multi-layered dram - perfect for savouring on a special night. Its combination of sweet PX influence, spice, oak, and seaside character make it a standout. If you enjoy unpeated Islay whiskies with serious sherry weight, this is a bottle worth splashing on.
Bought a bottle of this hoping to get a lovely sweet dram. It disappointed me in that it is quite fiery despite its age, and even after a cube of ice melted inside. I don’t taste the flavours reported in other reviews, not sure about the Sherry barrels (must be some because of the slight sweetness), but the oak wood flavour sort of overpowers it all. Big disappointment.
