Has there ever been a moment when you've been sipping Bulleit Bourbon and wanted it to have even more rye? Well you're in luck, they now have their own Rye whiskey! Bulleit Rye is made with a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley and is produced in small batches. An absolutely stunning rye that won a Double Gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2013.
Big heaps of cherries and vanilla, with subtle notes of leather and tobacco.
Rather hot at first, the spices coming to the forefront. This is followed by peaches, more cherries and a little bit of orange zest.
A smoky finish, carried by cinnamon, allspice and a hint of sweeties.
The Bulleit distillery sure know their way around a rye whiskey.

I'd seen rye described as the American Islay -style whisk[e]y. Islay single-malts are among my favourites (esp. that Caol Ila aged in moscatel barrels) so when I finally came across a bar where they serve this particular variant I grabbed my chance and ordered a neat dram with a small bottle of mineral water. Good bar: they serve in Glencairn glasses. The nose was nice and interesting, about what I expected from reading the comments here. Reminiscent of good bourbon but not as corn-syrup overwhelming as they sometimes are. Though with more and a bit agressive alcohol deeper in the glass. In the mouth, I was indeed reminded of a Scotch single malt, minus the peat of course. It's a good whiskey, but I found it a bit flat, lacking in complexity and evolution in the finish.
I am a scotch drinker and love the peaty stuff. I generally prefer my whisky to be peaty and if not have a spicy note to it. I dislike bourbon and Jack Daniels and don't understand the love affair with them. I have however always thought that Wild Turkey was not a bad whiskey and now I know why. They have always had some eye in thier distilling process. I had read about the American Ryes of old and when this came out a few years back I bought a bottle and fell in love with it. There are two bottles with certainty that are always in my home. Laphroig and Bulliet Rye. You can drink it neat or on the rocks but it makes a mean old fashioned. Muddled orange or lemon zest, sugar with angostura bitters in the bottom of the glass with a few cubes topped with a shot or two of this, stir and you are set.
Im typically a highland single malt scotch drinker but had read a few great reviews of Bulleit Rye and picked up a bottle. Im very glad I did My tastebuds picked up a hint of peach and cherry in a vanilla base that was perfectly oaked with just the right amount of burn to it. Traces of spices linger in the mouth afterwards from this slightly sweet smooth whiskey
Hands down top shelf Rye Whiskey.
To save me from having to try and do a better review, read the one titled "Great fun, strong & sweet rye flavour with 'frontier' harsh edge, tho not elegant". I'll only add that I can drink this all night and never tire of it. I don't care who makes it or how, but they did a damn fine job.
