Single Malt
Introduced as the flagship Port Charlotte expression produced by Bruichladdich in 2018, this 10 year old single malt from the Isle of Islay is a lip-smackingly smoky number indeed. It's peated to 40ppm, and drawn from a combination of first-fill American whiskey casks, second-fill American whiskey casks and second-fill French wine casks.
Salted caramel brownie, flamed orange peel, a hearty whack of seaweed.
Oak-y smoke and salty sea air, paired with sweeter notes of Custard Cream biscuits and white grape.
Ginger snaps, rye toast, drying peat smokiness.
While this is a superb whisky in its own right, the words 'heavily peated islay single malt' in big letters on the bottle lead you to expect more... Islay peat! Judged against the other big islays, the strength of flavour in this is a bit disappointing. This is quite subtle for an Islay.
the complexity of this whisky is remarkable! starts with intense peat and sea salt on the beach at low tide, then moves to caramel before darkening to treacle on it's way to the lightly singed citrus and vanilla notes at the end, all while having a sweet lassie fanning cool smoke into your nostrils. one dram demands a second!
I'm normally a real fan of a Jura, with the rare Islay I've tried not really hitting the mark. However, this is an absolute belter! The smoke is strong but the complexity that goes with it works beautifully. It just draws you in and gets better and better.
Marvellous tasting whisky! Floral, vanilla, sweet and very smokey but not a chimney smoke that overpowers. A beautifully complex whisky with many layers. By far my favourite.
Fantastic whisky
