That Boutique-y Whisky Company
Scotland
Single Malt
13 year old single malt from the Bruichladdich distillery, situated by the town that shares its name on the Isle of Islay. This was independently bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Company, and features a medley of hints of the inventive names of Bruichladdich bottlings from years gone by.
Batch 11 is a release of 478 bottles.
‘That Boutique-y Whisky Company’ bottles single malts, single grains and bourbons from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blended malts and blends. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels.
Pine, pineapple, apple crisps, a touch of wine-like booziness.
Mango, orange and pear, with toasted spice at the core.
Liquorice, sea salt and a touch of flint.
Lovely delicate whisky. Slight bitterness. Initially dominated by its alcohol content. Give it a little water and try to give it as much time as you can. Sweetness emerges later.
Really lovely expression from the master of diverse whisky. Oddly there's almost nothing on the nose, pretty generic spirit like nose with some light cereal notes and a tad of sweetness. On the palate though it pops into life; a beautiful honeyed sweetness gives way to a huge lump of sponge cake, with a feint almondy note that accompanies the cakiness brilliantly. I do get the toasted spices that are touted above but it's almost non existent in the background, certainly no orange, mango or pear - I don't find this in any way fruity. The finish is light, not heavy but also pleasant and the sweetness lingers finally giving way to a a cereal like saltiness with possibly a few of those spices creeping back in. For 47% it's as light as a feather. It's not a stellar whisky but it is a very nice, enjoyable and ridiculously moorish one. Don't expect this to hang around for long with friends over. In fact best not to let your friends taste it.
