Broken Bones
Slovenian single malt whisky from Broken Bones! This whisky is double pot distilled in a still designed and made by the founders Boštjan Marušic and Borut Osojnik, and matured in a combination of Slovenian and American oak barrels for a distinctive floral profile.
Marušic and Osojnik began their whisky-making journey in 2012, embarking on a long road of education, research, experimentation, and development. The name Broken Bones presented itself in July 2016, while the duo were busy filling their first whisky barrels. Both suffered accidents that saw them requiring hospital treatment – one broken leg and one broken nose! Barrels can be dangerous things, it turns out. Fortunately, neither break was too bad, and as a silver lining, the team had chanced upon a name for their distillery.
The nose opens with light and delicate barley notes, followed by newly cut grass, dandelion and other yellow flowers, then baked rhubarb tart, beetroot, parsnip.
On the palate, gentle sugars are on the forefront with spicy caramel that lead into honey, toffee apple and nougat, with hints of tobacco, liquorice, and corn syrup, before grittier spices emerge - clove, caraway, and pepper.
The finish is long, with restrained oak and lingering notes of stout, coffee, and maple syrup.
