Launched in 2012 by Allison Parc, collaborating with a French distiller in Cognac, Brenne French Single Malt Whisky is something quite special indeed. It's made with malted barley grown in Cognac, double distilled, then initially matured in Limousin oak casks before enjoying a finishing period in Cognac casks. Each bottle is drawn from a single cask and is bottled at 40% ABV. Rather cool stuff indeed.
Vanilla flowers arrive on the nose first, paired with pear drops and dried mango.
Brandied cherry and red rope liquorice. More vanilla, a hint of cinnamon spiciness and Nutella.
Chocolate raisins, pineapple and coconut ice.
This is clearly a whisky which divides opinion. Like another reviewer, I had this in my Advent Calendar 2022. It was my favourite. Another reviewer said ‘not Scotch’ of course it isn’t. It’s French. I suspect this whisky will appeal to brandy fans like me, having been matured in brandy casks. I’m no tasting expert and have no sense of smell but, as I get older, I find the heavy, peaty, smoky, Scotch whiskies increasingly unpalatable. I enjoyed this for its fruity lightness.
Very flowers / walking through the park smell on the nose, liquorice on the tongue, overall a nice little drop
Lovely, a real joy and quite different. Echoes of Calvados and very light.
A Christmas gift I am pleased to say when I tasted my wee dram it was so delicious not having to pallet smoke or peat yes it is more expensive than I Would usually purchase but so what.
Starts off 'wow, that's weird'; ends up 'I think I need more of this' 30ml later. Got lots of Calvados off of it personally and thoroughly enjoyed.
