The 11th edition of Berry Bros & Rudd's blended Scotch malt series, Blue Hanger, was first released in 2014. It is a vatting of 8 casks - 4 hogsheads, 3 sherry butts and 1 puncheons - and contains both peated and unpeated Bunnahabhain.
This range of blended malt whisky is named after William Hanger, the 3rd Lord Coleraine. He was a loyal customer of Berry Bros. & Rudd during the late 18th century, and was quite renowned for his striking blue clothes. Before long, he gained the moniker, 'Blue Hanger'. That's actually how my well-dressed friend got the sobriquet, 'Cool Robes' Benny.
White and citrus fruits break through peat smoke with a helping of honeyed nuts, vanilla and marzipan.
A malty palate carries prickles of oak spice among a little cocoa and mocha. Orange peel and yellow apples linger amongst golden barley and a soupcon of smoke.
Creamy and sweet, a little spice and smoke carries over on the finish.
I bought this based on independent reviews I'd read but thought it disappointing for the price point. Flavours were muted and less interesting than I'd hoped
