Benromach 10 Year Old (Old Bottling)

The 10 year old from Gordon and MacPhail's Benromach distillery. This was matured for the first nine years in 4/5 bourbon and 1/5 sherry casks before a year in sherry casks.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Dry, barley, big on malt and oak. Dry pine, fruity. A tad spirity. Sweet spices after a time and a hint of puckering prune from the sherry cask and maple fudge.

    Palate

Barley, slightly herbal, a little fruit, grassy. Big on malt, ground ginger.

    Finish

Mouthwateringly bittersweet. Ginger, dry sherry, almost hoppy after a while.

    Overall

A great whisky, its maturity belies its 10 years of age and the sherry finish has done wonders.

    Peaty

Agree with other reviewers. Not an easy whisky but a very good whisky. Peat notes are very strong to my palate and if I'd tasted it blind I would have said 'A non age statement Talker?' Oddly, it reminds me of Ardbeg Uigeadail. Sherry and Peat combined

    Good quality 10yr old.

I sampled the Benromach in my city centre pub and I have to say it was a lovely Dram not to powerful on the nose and the smokeness might be the best I've had in a while.

    Strong Flavours

A sherry, smoky, liquorice dram here. Not everyones flavour profile choice, but overall for a 10 year old,its rather complex and rather good!!

A very mature 10 year old

Those who have rated this whisky a 4.. are spot on. Though let me make it clear, this is not just any 4.. this is a strong 4.. a special 4 as this whisky deserves. But it can't go beyond 4 because of its flaws, yet.. ironically, it is the flaws that earn it a .. "special" 4. This whisky is like a "young" at heart Grampa. He isn't a perfect individual but he's likeable, perhaps loveable and has heart. And while he might be all the above, he isn't the most "out there old guy"... he's calm, relaxed, interesting enough but not terribly so to make you always want to revisit him day after day, but when you do, you have to slow down to his pace to see just what he's all about and appreciate it. That is this whisky. You must slow down with this whisky and not come into the event with huge expectations, and then, it will surpass your expectations interestingly enough. It is a quality product, perhaps the best 10 year old matured whisky I've ever tried. There is no sign of youth in it whatsoever, it is more like a 12 year old, possibly all the way up to a 14 year old matured scotch. It is lovely, with sherry undertones and smoky overtones. It is beautifully balanced with a dry and gorgeous finish. The finish on this whisky takes centre stage.. it is long and satisfying. I will warn you there is a slight soapy taste most prevalent in the mid palate, but not in a bad way, at least not to me. This 10 also gets better as it stands. So the key word with a bottle like this is, "take your time", be patient, slow down to its pace and you will be greatly rewarded with the deliciousness that is Benromach 10. An addendum: Unlike distilleries that are absolutely horrendous to their customers (like Balvenie and Tomatin) who and only care about the $$ (and let's face it, don't make great young to mid aged whisky to boot) .. Benromach on the other hand, care about their customers satisfaction and stature to their routes and that reflects their quality. Highly recommended!

the biggest bang for your buck

A whisky that has it all. Sweetness, complexity, long taste and a subtle mix of smoke and peat. All of that for 40 euro's.
