Sherry

This single malt from Benrinnes spent 13 years maturing, beginning in a refill hogshead and finishing charming little Pedro Ximénez sherry octaves. These tiny casks are marvellous things, their small size allows greater interaction between the spirit and the wood, so you can expect plenty of sweet, fruity sherry influence here. We selected this one for our exclusive Master of Malt collection, releasing a total of 156 bottles, without added colour or chill filtration.

Rich layers of chocolate and honeyed nuts, with maple pastries, and hints of coffee grounds in tow.
Stewed plums join honeyed flapjack, drizzled with chocolate, while spiced pears and silky butterscotch balance gentle woody spice.
A waft of delicate smoke drifts in for the finish, with lingering syrupy sweetness and rich, sherried oak.

Motivated to write a review here as James clearly understands as much about whisky as he does about marketing. I have a bottle of this. It's a very balanced Benrinnes, distillery character and cask in harmony, if a bit pricey for what it is... there are other bottlings I've bought on this site and prefer (Glenallachie 10yo Cask Strength or Wormtub 10yo Cask Strength, for example). But this is a real delicious whisky, drinkable at bottling strength, and full of Benrinnes character.
Was excited to see a sherry cask finish but unfortunately I suspect this spent all of 7 hours in a sherry cask. Basic flavours of a bourbon cask and MM shouldn’t be advertising it as a sherry cask finish. Very disappointing and not worth the price at all. Definitely rushed for sake of marketing.
