This BenRiach 22 Year Old was initially matured in the traditional style in American bourbon barrels before it was finished in dark rum barrels, sourced from Jamaica. Non-chill filtered and of natural colour, BenRiach bottled this single malt Scotch whisky at 46% ABV.
Porridge oats and barley, with nutmeg, dried oranges, cranberries and brown sugar.
Slightly oily. Through a nutty character and rummy thickness comes gooey caramel, helpings of apricots, dark chocolate, bittersweet vanilla and soft baking spices.
Creme brulée sweetness and some wood polish linger.
It’s got to said that when compared to Glenfiddich’s 21 yo rum cask finish now called gran reserve it has nothing on this sumptuous treat, I tried my hardest I did not to drink this and only use it for those special occasions only as fate would have it, every night was a special occasion in the company of such an outstanding tipple. The price is a special price to and again I said to my self only the once and I tried my hardest I did not to buy this for those special occasions but as fate would have I did it twice. It is a beautiful dram though and it is simply the best rum finished single malt I’ve had and I’ve had a few. I think it comes down to it’s age using a very old stock to finish this in dark rum which I love and why it appealed to me so much as it had 2 of the 3 favourite spirits in it and with age it takes on more complex aromas and tastes as those extremely slow chemical reactions with the wood take place and mature it really has had a lot of time to pull those sought after flavours that the master whisky blender coaches every single drop from the barrels. He really hit the jackpot with this one as it’s liquid gold and I agree with the flavour profile abive only with a few more I’ve found delving into such a fantastic crafted dram. I really do recommend this to anyone who loves whisky and dark rum like me as its totally worth the price.
