The Bellevoye range is an intriguing selection of blended malt whiskies made with three different single malts from France. The Rouge expression is unpeated, and made with casks specially selected by the producers.
Floral malt, Amaretto sweetness of cherry and almond, earthy vanilla.
Warming toasted oak balances by blueberry and chocolate brownie.
Citrus blossom and Demerara sugar.
I picked this up at CDG on my way back to Texas. I went to a whiskey bar in Paris and sampled a lot, but this was not one of them so I hadn’t heard anything about it. Go back to Texas opened it. It was a little sharp. Let it breathe for a week and now it’s very smooth and delicious. I’m saving it for special occasions because I can’t find it in Texas yet maybe I’ll just go back to Paris.
The marketing and narrative of the product really got me hooked in the first place, and I was expecting.. well, something great! Finally I was gonna be able to boast and gloat about us French being able to craft a proper malt! Alas, nothing's farther from the truth. What do they say about expectations again? There's no description needed as it doesn't taste like malt whisky at all, the malt blend is so weak that it only reflects character from the Cognac casks it's been aged in, resulting in a pis-aller of an honest VO, like the one I used to sip and cook in the kitchen with my grandmother (Rest her kind soul). When I think about the price I've paid for it and what I could've had instead - malt or rye - it gives me shivers!
Excellent, smooth. Was served on Air France.
Pleasantly surprising
