Unveiled in 2014, the 15 Year Old Single Barrel Sherry Cask is a wonderful sight from Balvenie - single malt Scotch whisky fully matured in Sherry casks. These are released in batches of no larger than 800 bottles from a single cask, each one being hand numbered. Although no two casks are the same, and therefore won't produce an identical single malt, the casks are carefully selected by Balvenie's Malt Master and feature a consistent, rich, spiced character, complimented by hints of elegant oak.
Dense Christmas cake with icing, full of sticky, syrupy dried fruits, cherries, finely chopped nuts and grated nutmeg. Flamed orange peel, ginger, a hint of struck match (but only very subtle in the sample we tasted), fresh orange segments and plums develop.
Big old fashioned Sherry matured character, more bread-like fruitcake, malt loaf and nutty Oloroso. Slightly bitter and rum-like, superb.
Spicy fruitcake with cocoa.
Classic Sherry matured whisky, really top stuff.
Very tasty with slight boldness. Heavy fruits. Won’t go wrong. A great keeper
A wonderful scotch. Has a definite, memorable identity. Soft honey notes. Like a fine nougat, gentle citrus. Long finish. Liquorice maybe.
I'm exited. I open, and wow the smell is intense. I taste and wow. So rich, sherry heavy, so fruity, nutty, christmas cake, sticky syrupy. Maybe a sticky toffe pudding. My god my taste buds have just orgasmed. Wow. 3 finger drams later....
First it's important to mention there are two versions of this: first-fill sherry and second (or re-fill) sherry - and you will not know until you see the color, and even whern you do you still won't be sure. I think I have a first fill as it is quite dark but I've seen ones darker than mine so who knows? Point is, flavour is great. Nose is typical sherry, mouthfeel is nice and rich, palate is great lots of fruit with a bit of spice, and finish has a really nice peppery oakiness to it but not overdone just rounds it off well. It reminds me of a much improved Macallan 12 sherry oak and is really a very nice whisky. If you like sherried whiskys it is a no brainer, if you don't it's still well worth your time as it is not as intensely sherried as some other sherry bombs so would suit those less inclined. Very nice, and definitely benefits from the higher abv and non-chill filtration - wish Balvenie did more in this vein.
When I first opened it, I did not like it very much. I just left the bottle right on my table. After one week, I gave it a try. Wow!
