
Balvenie DoubleWood is, to not much surprise, aged in two kinds of oak casks! It was firstly matured in refill American oak casks before it was treated to a finish in first fill European oak Oloroso sherry butts for an additional nine months. The expression was launched in 1993, and has become a somewhat iconic whisky over the years. Even at 12 years old, this rich and complex dram is an excellent example of what the Balvenie distillery can craft.
Gristy, supple nuttiness intertwined with spices. Honeyed sultanas and grapes. Hugely inviting.
Sweet with good body. The bourbon characters develop; gentle spice with a little vanilla, a hint of balancing peat lurking quietly in the substrata. Dried fruit too, combining with nuts, nutmeg, cinnamon, back into the bourbon notes - so well integrated.
Spicy, slightly drying, still sweet.
A classic, always a pleasure to revisit. (This is also a single malt with the ability to convert a non-whisky drinker with its deliciousness...)

Sweet as you'd expect from a Speyside, but very well balanced. Lovely smooth finish.
Kinda fun reading all the comments. I loved it! ? A good whiskey for the money. (Around 460 Swedish kronor) Ofc there is better whiskeys, but this one is pretty damn good!

Great taste at a reasonable price there are better sherried drams that are similar and don’t use artificial coloring like bunnahabhain. However this is very good and easy to find. Not a sherry bomb by any means but you can tell it’s there.
This is really quite good. Unfortunately I started my scotch journey later in life thus I find this scotch in the $50 range US. In that $50'ish category of scotches....this one is a leap beyond the base line three 'Glens' and far more complex. I really enjoy this one and given its ready availability will likely return to it again and again. The dram is not atypical of Speyside/Balvenie....but still offers a complex and unique profile. Only the hardest of peat-heads could possibly find much fault with this one.
