Balvenie DoubleWood 12yo Bottling Note

Balvenie DoubleWood is, to not much surprise, aged in two kinds of oak casks! It was firstly matured in refill American oak casks before it was treated to a finish in first fill European oak Oloroso sherry butts for an additional nine months. The expression was launched in 1993, and has become a somewhat iconic whisky over the years. Even at 12 years old, this rich and complex dram is an excellent example of what the Balvenie distillery can craft.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Gristy, supple nuttiness intertwined with spices. Honeyed sultanas and grapes. Hugely inviting.

Palate: Sweet with good body. The bourbon characters develop; gentle spice with a little vanilla, a hint of balancing peat lurking quietly in the substrata. Dried fruit too, combining with nuts, nutmeg, cinnamon, back into the bourbon notes - so well integrated.

Finish: Spicy, slightly drying, still sweet.

Overall: A classic, always a pleasure to revisit. (This is also a single malt with the ability to convert a non-whisky drinker with its deliciousness...)

Good, for beginners, watch out for the hype

Good dram, not exceptional. Bought into the hype. Have watched many YouTube reviews and pulled the trigger. Paid $75. Not a great value at that price. Would make a good gift to a novice or a bourbon drinker getting into scotch. If you are a scotch nerd or experienced, skip it, and put your money towards a better bottle that is more complex and flavorful.

Elegant and slightly sweet

An elegant smooth and slightly sweet drink but with enough craft and complexity to open your eyes. Great to pour among friends.

I have reviewed this whisky a number of times as the "whisky Champion "of Dan Murphy's Newcastle NSW & find it unfaltering in its definition. Just a fabulous drink for whisky connoisseurs everywhere!

Not much of anything

I was deliberately looking for a lighter sweeter whisky and after reading the reviews went for this. Really disappointed, This one is so smooth and gentle that it doesn't really taste of anything. Indistinct and vacant might be better descriptors. Naked Grouse is a much better option.

Affordable smoothness

A well balanced affordable dram.

Soft on the nose with light fruits, a hint of oak and easily to tell sherry finished.

A peppery sweet dram. Hints of citrus, honey and vanilla. Just the perfect ABV as a smooth sipping whisky.

Mid finish that lasts long enough until your next sip. Finishes with some oak, with a very slight hint of peat and general sweetness.

Grandma’s wooden spoon

Imagine a bee having spent a week eating hazelnuts and pfefferkuchen, before returning home to the hive. Or the smell of grandma’s wooden spoon on stir up Sunday. Perhaps you can remember mother stirring a spoon of golden syrup into your morning porridge. “Go easy on the dairy though old girl, this isn’t rice pudding”
A dreamy dram.
