Balvenie DoubleWood 12yo Bottling Note

Balvenie DoubleWood is, to not much surprise, aged in two kinds of oak casks! It was firstly matured in refill American oak casks before it was treated to a finish in first fill European oak Oloroso sherry butts for an additional nine months. The expression was launched in 1993, and has become a somewhat iconic whisky over the years. Even at 12 years old, this rich and complex dram is an excellent example of what the Balvenie distillery can craft.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Gristy, supple nuttiness intertwined with spices. Honeyed sultanas and grapes. Hugely inviting.

Palate: Sweet with good body. The bourbon characters develop; gentle spice with a little vanilla, a hint of balancing peat lurking quietly in the substrata. Dried fruit too, combining with nuts, nutmeg, cinnamon, back into the bourbon notes - so well integrated.

Finish: Spicy, slightly drying, still sweet.

Overall: A classic, always a pleasure to revisit. (This is also a single malt with the ability to convert a non-whisky drinker with its deliciousness...)

Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old Reviews

Bad bottle, change of style, or decline in quality?

I just purchased a bottle of the DoubleWood 12 from MoM, having recently finished an older bottle, and I was very disappointed. Instead the rich, balanced whisky that I had just finished, I found a somewhat thin and unbalanced whisky with smoky notes that I don't associate with the DoubleWood. While it still had a bit of the old sweet finish, it also had added medicinal notes. I don't know if I this was a bad bottle, if Balvenie is changing their core range based on their "week of peat" experiments, or if their quality is just declining. In any case, I found it to be a major disappointment, especially compared to the old bottle of DoubleWood 12 that I had just finished.

Not bad but not great

Nice “average” whisky to drink and share with friends. Could be so much more if it was unchillfiltered, and therefore leaves the experience limited. I suspect added colouring too.

Better value whisky out there which give better experience for the consumer.

Get your hands off

Like visiting The Dome. Part of Christmas.

Creamy, nutty, smooth as you like

Those nights are drawing in. Back on the gravy. Right, 4.5 doesn’t say it’s the best. But for the money it fits right in as a session whisky. Call me a philistine but if you like a ‘few’ it’s spot on. Smooth, lingers as long as the price reflects, and well balanced.

Over hyped

It's a very good whisky for the money, juicy grape like smells with juicy stewed fruit taste , woods and bits of spice and vanilla , got a slight tobacco on the finish, all very good but incredibly safe and a bit boring ..maybe that's a positive
