Balvenie 21 Year Old Bottling Note

Here we have the flagship single malt from Balvenie's series of Port Wood whiskies. This 21 year old expression, a marriage of rare Balvenie, was impressively finished in 30 year old port pipes. Originally released in 1996, this whisky is a veritable masterclass in poise and balance. It’s fruity and very subtly smoky, the perfect after-dinner dram.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Elegant. White peach and a faint puff of smoke.

Palate: A gentle, subtle palate with loads of complexity. It offers up a mix of cranberries and cooked raspberries, a little white grape juice and barley.

Finish: Cocoa, slightly bitter as it tails away gracefully.

Worth the money and more.
My all time favourite whisky. Keep for a special occasion and it will be enjoyed thoroughly by all. I almost guarantee.

My first adventure into higher end single malt
I remember buying a bottle of this from a local wine merchant in 2005. I payed £50. It’s was worth every penny.

Aliphatic(?) Smell and Taste
I can only speak to the bottle I received for my 55th birthday. I've had a few drams, just to give the whiskey a thorough tasting and because so many good folks here have rated this five stars. I've been drinking (good) whiskey pretty seriously for more than 10 years, although I'm no concierge.

The port finish hides under an overwhelming alcohol smell and the dominant enjoyable scent I detect is like cherries; secondary is chocolate and light smoke.

The first taste on the tip of the tongue is sharp alcohol and it's the last taste running down the sides of my tongue. I'm completely overwhelmed at how sharp this bottle delivers itself and I've had 12yo selections that are smoother. The flavors are soft and peach pokes its head out ahead of others. The aftertaste is pleasant enough and slightly sweet.

I do enjoy other Balvenie selections, notably the 12yo DoubleWood and 14yo Caribbean Cask, although neither is usually in my home bar lineup. The 21 though, is a "once and done" and I almost wonder if I received a mistake bottling alongside all of these positive reviews.

Light and complex
The Port finish is relatively light, though it does compliment this already soft spirit. Quite a unique expression, everything else port finished I’ve had has been much heavier influenced.

Balvenie with a beautiful brand but slacking on the delivery.
140 at 40%? I love Balvenie, but I struggle to see how you've got your 12 year single cask above 47% yet this is almost thrice the price and is the base 40%, nothing from Balvenie should be under 43%, and you should lose that 12 Triple cask because the oak kills it.

Wasn't sure about this since it's quite different to my normal tastes, but I am so, so glad I did. It's simply delicious - I am positive there will be more to it than I could get out of a 3cl sampler, and the only thing stopping me from ordering a bottle immediately is the need to finish one of my current others.

Quite simply stunnng - I could drink a gallon of this stuff. The finish is phenomenal, lingers long on the tastebuds and goes down oh so easy - biggest problem for me is trying to keep such a special whisky for special occasions.

Not for the thrill, but with class.
Subtle, complex, an absolute gentleman's scotch. Worth the money, but you need to understand that this was made with class, not for thrill.
