A terrific single malt from The Balvenie. This Speysider was initially aged in traditional oak casks before it was finished in casks which previously held Caribbean rum, imparting some extra sweetness and warmth to the whisky. In fact, to create it, Balvenie malt master David C. Stewart made his very own blend of West Indian rums, filled it into casks, and then eventually replaced the rum in said casks with Balvenie's whisky! The fabulous result is a well-rounded whisky with notes of toffee, fruit and vanilla.
The aroma is rich with notes of tropical fruits, namely passion fruit, and creamy toffee.
Sweet vanilla forms a creamy palate with notes of apples and mangoes with a hint of orange in the background.
The finish lingers with a vanilla focussed character.
Mouth-coating and fruity with superb balance, this is an excellent new release from the chaps at Balvenie.

This has been my go-to whisky for years now. Purists may not like the sweetness from the rum casks, but its such an easy to drink dram. This is what I introduce to my non-whisky drinking friends, and they all love it. Highly recommended.
My wife and I did a tasting between the 12 and 17 Doublewood and the 14 Carribean Cask with my current favourite, Glenmorangie's 18yo as a comparison. both the 12 and 17 had slight sulphurous notes to the nose but we're far more drinkable than Macallan's Sherry Wood which I can't bear. They were both rich in nose and palate with strong flavours of dried fruit and sherry with the 17 being far smoother to the taste, unsurprisingly I guess, but our favourite was the 14 Carribean Cask whose nose was fruity and exotic, and palate infinitely drinkable. Not the most complex whiskey, but for Speyside, it's wonderful and a great addition for any cabinet whereas the two doublewood are just too similar to many others like the Aberlour 12. That said, if you can stretch, the Glenmorangie 18 still rules over them all for us. Go for that instead.
A very good expression - highly recommended.
I agree with the evaluation of this wonderful whisky. It is a little short on the finish and needs time and a drop of water to lose the slightly unpleasant tanin taste that is there too.
Smells good. But not really rich on palate.
