Balvenie 12 Year Old - The Sweet Toast of American Oak

Stories always start at the beginning (unless they're one of those purposely confusing stories like Memento or those Funnybones books - it's never explained why they're skeletons!), and this is the introductory release from The Balvenie Stories range! These releases all give light to events and people in Balvenie's past and present - this one, for example, takes inspiration from apprentice malt master Kelsey McKechnie and her idea to import virgin oak barrels from Kentucky and deeply toast them at the distillery's cooperage. They were then filled with Balvenie's ex-bourbon oak aged whisky for a finishing period, resulting in... Well, this very whisky you see here!

    The best

Brilliant makes me feel contented and snug and a wee bit tipsy later on

Smells and tastes great...until you swallow.

First of all, I am a big Balvenie fan. This whisky has an aroma that reminds me of saw dust, with tastes of honey and oats. It is ridiculously smooth too. It has great characteristics, but the taste falls off sharply. It leaves you with a taste of city water on the back end, which makes me think they sacrificed flavor for smoothness. I guess if you’re new to whisky, then this would be a good starter to get your foot in the door. Otherwise I’d go with the Double wood.

    Pleasant, bright, smooth

I like it - cirtus on the nose, more citrus but with more sweetness and creaminess coming to the fore and a clean, pleasant finish. It is incredibly sippable and is, as far as any whisky can be, a summer whisky. It's good product for the money.

    Scotch for a bourbon drinker

Hard to beat the double wood as stated earlier. Pleasant drinking scotch with a little sweetness and oak. A nice change of pace from what is out there. Worth a try if the price doesn’t bother you.

    Not what I expected...

..."feel a bit watery, it feels thin"....when I bought this I had high expectations....but after trying a bottle I found myself thinking the same thing....a nice enough dram but if I have to choose I would pick the Doublewood 12 instead...
