    Balblair 1999 - 2nd Release

The second release of 1999 vintage Balblair single malt Scotch whisky replaces the 1997 vintage in their core range. The ace Highland whisky was matured in a combination of American ex-bourbon barrels and Spanish ex-Sherry butts from 1999 (the year people love to party like) until 2014.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

The Sherry oak takes hold of the nose with thick slices of warm Christmas cake and juicy raisins. Beneath you'll find apple peel and honey'd malt.

    Palate

Sherry spices still at the fore, though the vanilla sweetness from the bourbon barrel shines through, as does some warm, oak-y touches.

    Finish

    Full and long.

    Overall

Certainly a Summer dram, bright and pleasing.

Remember when Balblair produced magic. Close your eyes.

Nose: Montrachet nose...and the good honeyed stuff. Palate: Stunning mouthfeel, but fuck that. That palate is a burst of thick oranged melon. Wow. Wow. Wow. After: Somewhat bitsy, but a beautiful example of whiskey can be. Sweet fruits, the wood spices absent...and it's not a bad thing.

    Not up to expectations

I have to say I was just a little disappointed with this release. It somehow lacked the intensity of earlier vintages and there was no great length to the flavour. To my taste the Bourbon and the Sherry conflicted and it seemed to lack the softness and smoothness that I have come to expect from Balblair. All in all this was not my best purchase.

    Perfect sub

I do like balblair 1990 but you can't drink that all the time or you will be skint. Perfect sub

    Lovely sherry finish

I just love the Balblair sherry finished malts. The bourbon is always still carrying the malt, but now it's wrapped in fruity spicy light chocolate. superb

    Sublime stuff

I love Balblair, and their latest releases just keep getting better and better. Lately I've been drinking the 2003, 2004, 1999, 1997, 1990 and 1989. And each one is pure delight. This 1999 gives me the perfect balance between sherry and bourbon, not overpowering the sophisticated highland spirit. Treat yourself and try Balblair. You will fall in love.
