The second release of 1999 vintage Balblair single malt Scotch whisky replaces the 1997 vintage in their core range. The ace Highland whisky was matured in a combination of American ex-bourbon barrels and Spanish ex-Sherry butts from 1999 (the year people love to party like) until 2014.
The Sherry oak takes hold of the nose with thick slices of warm Christmas cake and juicy raisins. Beneath you'll find apple peel and honey'd malt.
Sherry spices still at the fore, though the vanilla sweetness from the bourbon barrel shines through, as does some warm, oak-y touches.
Full and long.
Certainly a Summer dram, bright and pleasing.
Soft on the pallet i get caramel/honey tones a really nice and easy drinking Dram, will certainly buy again and it sells really well in my bar.
I came home to Australia from an extended European holiday, including the Malt Whisky Festival on Islay at the end on May 2015. A thousand UK pounds worth of whisky were lugged across 20 countries, and with hard to get bottles in my bags, this is my favourite, along with the 2015 Bruichladdich Lochindaal (bottle 410 of 500). Those and a single cask Aberfeldy - as rare as hen's teeth and worth every penny. That Christmas pudding taste, shared with my 90 year old Dad on Christmas Day, was certainly delectable. I am now researching where to get another bottle in Australia, as this baby hasn't lasted long. My favourite tipple at the moment.
