Auchentoshan
Scotland
Single Malt
A Lowland single malt matured in 3 different casks, namely: Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks, bourbon casks and Oloroso Sherry casks. A distinctive triple distilled whisky from Auchentoshan.
Cooked fruit, sherry, toffee, a rum-like quality and notes of Bas Armagnac distilled circa 1940.
Rich. Liqueur cherries in dark chocolate, more sherried fruit, ripe dark forest fruits, like a Black Forest Gateaux.
Superb, led by thick dark treacle and toffee notes and chewy wooded notes, balanced with a green fruit edge.
Very nice wonderful taste
Nice ? A little woody, a little oily rich, it has a nice lingering flavour, a bit of sweetness with the lingering flavour.
Trying it in last years advent calendar. One of the favorites for sure.
Auchentoshan Three Wood is a very confused malt whisky. To me it tastes like a very good Bourbon whisky. If it was a Bourbon it would be hailed rather highly across the board. As it’s a lowland scotch it’s a bit disjointed. Very strange. Anyway, just sipping on it, forgetting what it is and where it’s from, it’s a damn fine whisky. Loads of fruit and toffee notes, with a beautiful balanced finish. Like Bourbon? Go for it and don’t let the mixed reviews put you off. However, with the above said, it’s not worth £46 a bottle. I purchase for much less than that. £30-£35 is about spot on.
An unusual Scotch which might not be for everyone, but drinks like a smooth Irish whiskey yet made with some smokiness... sweet, approachable, and a good all-around tasty scotch. The second-hand sherry casks are the key, much like Irish whiskeys (e.g., Bushmills 16 / 21)... Oloroso casks in particular give an amazing richness of flavor (as with Bushmills 21). Some purists might call this "heresy" but I say it's very much worth a try!
