    Single Malt

    Auchentoshan Springwood 1l

Auchentoshan's Springwood expression, which spends its maturation resting in American oak bourbon casks, was released for travel retail. Rich in vanilla and orange, this is a flavoursome Lowland single malt, from a top distillery that triple distils its whisky.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Light and fragrant with classic bourbon-cask vanilla and honey, with hints of orange oil shining through.

    Palate

Chocolatey on the palate, with continued vanilla fudge and citrus peels.

    Finish

A rather refreshing palate of lemon and orange.

When I saw that this whiskey had a collective average rating of 3 stars on this website, I had to come and see why - as I thought that was a bit harsh. Immediately I can see that some reviews must either be A) based on a different Auchentoshan altogether B) written by a very naive and inexperienced whiskey drinker or C) written by fanciful story-tellers. To say this is a "harsh" whisky is misleading at the very least. If anything, it is on the mellow side which many scotch drinkers won't like. I like the mellowness and the smoothness but I appreciate that palates vary. This whisky is triple distilled so quite literally has most of the "throat-punch" taken out of it! It is more or less completely absent of peatiness with low smoke on the nose or palate. As a matter of fact, it could quite literally be confused for an Irish whiskey in a blind test. It deserves 4 stars on any list but given its value for money and availability, I rate it 4.5.

All taste leaves pretty quickly. Easy to drink, ice would dilute it too much however. Very drinkable for uncultured swine like my friends.

Nose: slight stingy turpentine, a hint of wood varnish, spring breeze that carries hints of sweet lilac, hint of sharp hospital disinfectant, (i inhaled too quickly at first and burnt the inside of my right nostril) Palate: immediate syrupy mouthfeel, then like walking down a mountain path and getting whipped in the face by small tiny branches, notes of burning photos like after a break up but taste disappears quickly. Finish: slight lump in esophagus feel, bitter taste white stringy stuff from peeling oranges taste, tiny puff of horse breath on neck heat.

    It's worth the price. Enjoy!

It's elegant and enjoyable. I believe many whiskey drinking ladies would like it as I do.

    Not a single Malt

I had been drinking heartwood for many years and have been a great fan. Last week I bought the spring wood and suddenly all high regards for Auchentoshan were deeply compromised. It’s absolutely not what single malts stand for. If you are up for a spring wood, would suggest you go for a JW Red label. Maybe Red Label would win
