    Product details

    Auchentoshan 12 Year Old

Lowland distillery Auchentoshan's flagship single malt whisky, famously triple-distilled which is unusual for a Scotch. This contributes to its signature smooth character, however. It's been matured in both American oak and sherry casks.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

A cereal-sweet nose with notes of guava and mango, with a drizzle of honey.

    Palate

Oaky and sweet palate, with barley sugar, a little passion fruit and vanilla custard too. Perhaps some rose petal jelly in there.

    Finish

A lengthy, dry and oaky finish with barley sweetness and cocoa powder.

Very drinkable with a subtle smokiness. Bargain if under £30.

Bought this for £27 from Tesco on a whim, as I hadn’t seen any Auchentoshans with an age statement in the supermarket before. First try, I thought it wasn’t bad at all for the money. Smooth enough with some sherry sweetness. Left it for a while. Tried it again after some Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve (recommend if it’s under £30 as it’s v. pleasant) & was struck by a peatiness I’d missed the first time. It really shows how different whisky can taste, depending on what’s hit your palate before it.

    Could be much better

It's actually ok quality sherry casks they've used, but it's so flushed out, way too much water that it dilutes the taste and quality. If only they would keep it non chill filtered, 46% or more, natural colour, the brand would take off. Auchentoshan has so much potential, yet I feel their mainstream expressions and this one in particular misses the wow factor to favour repeat purchases. That being said, it's a nice whisky, thick sherry influence upfront with the bourbon spiciness coming in the back, nice honey and tangerine notes but way too soft at 40%.

A whisky that fails at everything...

Tasting notes on the label is spot on. It starts off with very light notes of mandarin, toffee, honeysuckle and a little bit of wood ash and tannins, but it is quite thin and a bit boring like other reviews have stated but it's ok. But what really turned this whisky around for me later on is how the oxidation of it in the bottle opened up rather weird and off putting notes witch i could only describe as (and i'm not kidding when i say this is what i get) rotten onions and cabbages on both the smell and taste that just completely dominates the whole thing. Quite possibly the worst single malt I'VE tried yet and only gets 1 star for drinkability. Thank god i bought a miniature bottle instead cause i ended up mixing the rest

    The Exeter City of Whisky

This is not amazing. It won’t feature on anyone’s must have lists. No one with hope Santa brings them a bottle. But, it’s not too bad. If you think of the Three Wood to be the Everton of the whisky world, this is Exeter City. Not amazing but can occasionally cause an FA cup upset. The American Oak by the way is Maidstone United. Total gash.

    Decent casual whisky

I was not expecting much from this one but the flavor is such a pleasant citrus sweet to a dry finish. Definitely a good casual whisky I’ll be returning to.
