Arran

Single Malt
The second edition of Arran's Machrie Moor Cask Strength has landed! Peated to 20PPM, this has been bottled at a generous 58.2% ABV, resulting in a full-bodied flavour profile of classic Arran fruitiness, wafts of peat smoke and a touch of vanilla. The Machrie Moor series is named after a peat bog on the west coast of Arran.
Ahh yes, Arran! Big tropical fruit notes (think pineapple and you'll be on the right track), though now with a good helping of barrel char and smoky peat.
Developing red berry notes and yet more coastal peat. Full-bodied and enjoyably oily.
A final hint of vanilla and a lasting peaty hum.

Don't listen to anyone who says it's trying to be an Islay, peat is only associated with Islay in recent times because they held onto the traditional style of drying the Barley, highland and speyside scotch used to be peaty too.
Not sure about this one, they may be trying too hard to make a peaty Islay style malt from the arran standard, and usually Sherry flavoured, whisky. I don't normally add water to anything but this seems to need it. Even watered a little, it's Harsh at first, tarry and sour over a slightly sweet base. But drink it slowly, let it seep through your system and there are rewards to be found. Certainly not boring but not up there with the islay (or mull!) Malts.
I get apple on the finish in amongst the salty peatiness. I'm an Islay fan and this does not disappoint! This is more smokey than phenolic, well worth the money!
