The 2010 released Amarone finish from Arran. This has a similar style to the brilliant Sassicaia finish. Amarone is dry Italian red made using partially dried Corvina grapes, Rondinella grapes and Molinara.
I just had a bottle of this lovely whisky delivered yesterday and already I can see it being one of my favourites. I did find that adding a few drops of water brought out some lovely notes, so it may be worth experimenting to your own taste. You can certainly tell the difference with Amarone casks being used. Very nice indeed and easily worth the price.
Absolutely lovely dram (or several!). Really enjoyed the strong flavour and no need for any water based additives in my humble opinion (from an Islay peat fan)
Being honest I picked this because my local wine merchant didn’t have any Arran Port Cask Finished in stock. Both are quit high in alcoholic content at 50% a dab of water is needed in my view. The Amerone is sharper than the Port finish... which is a little smoother still in need of a little water though. Not a bottle to drink one your own. Invite some friends who appreciate a decent scotch.
It spent 8 years in ex bourbon casks and only 9 months in amarone casks. It's really only a finish, maybe it should spend some much time. The amarone can be detected more in the colour than in the flavour, but it leaves its mark in any case. I recommend it with some water since it has a high alcholic gradation and the alcol tends to cover its great flavour and aroma. Quite good for its price and something to try!
Nose: cinnamon, floral and fruity, sherry and red-wine, slightly bitter and dry Palate: very smooth and elegant with notes of plum, cherry and cinnamon Finsih: red-wine, herbs and dry All in All: I like Arran very much but this bottle is one of the best. It combined the strength and deepness from Arran with the elegent character of Amarone-Casks
