Ardbeg Eureka! is a tribute to its loyal Committee and its 200,000-strong membership on the 25th anniversary of its founding. The Ardbeg Committee was created to ensure a network of support for the Islay distillery so it would never close again and the brand rewards members each year with special bottlings like Eureka!
To create this release, Ardbeg asked a select group (100 members from 15 different countries) from the Committee to go to a hidden corner of the Distillery on Ardbeg Day 2023 and participate in an experiment named Operation Smokescreen. There they tasted and discussed five extreme (and secret) examples of Ardbeg and the findings were sent to the sensory laboratory. There Dr Bill Lumsden, Ardbeg’s director of whisky creation, and master blender Gillian Macdonald used the findings to create a bottling representing the Committee’s multi-faceted preferences.
After months of experimentation, the pair created a fascinating product. They combined whisky aged in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks with roasted malt spirit matured in bourbon cask and bottled the whole thing up at 52.5% ABV.
Slàinte mhath to 25 years of the Ardbeg Committee!
A burst of ripe cherries and juicy red apples, then caramel and cocoa. Coffee grounds, cedar, and dark chocolate emerge as wisps of bonfire smoke meet sweet, hand-rolled tobacco aromas and a hint of fresh tarmac.
Nutty toffee brittle, raisin fudge, and dark, juicy fruits (fig, damson, and plump cherries). Then comes a salty twist, crispy seaweed, followed by applewood embers alongside medicinal iodine, burnt moss, and lingering ash. Dark chocolate-coated raisins lead into roasted chicory and a warm hit of sweet cinnamon.
Long and chewy with sticky treacle toffee, a flash of aniseed spice, and a final swirl of coal tar soap.
