    Ardbeg Corryvreckan

Powerfully peaty and immensely satisfying, Ardbeg's Corryvreckan is what happens when the distillery of Islay's Kildalton Coast aims to make a whisky with a particularly medicinal style than its usual expressions. Aptly named after a nearby whirlpool, Corryvreckan is an intense dram that we simply love.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Sticking plasters, buttery, creamy, roast chicken crisps, herbal, almost a hint of pine…

    Palate

Cream, spices, tingling, fresh fruit, medicinal, plasters, Clementines. Orange peels.

    Finish

Salty, more medicinal, smoked meats, peat is fleeting, tarmac, chilli, salt.

    Overall

    Astonishing.

    No thank you.

Not a fan. The medicinal quality is what hit me hardest. I spent years in a cadaver lab in medical school, and this scotch reminds me of the smell that would linger on my clothes long after I left. Probably why I can’t drink this stuff.

    Not Sure.

I like big OTT Islay whiskies so was looking forwards to this but I’m a bit conflicted. It’s a bit like being hit in the face with a burning peat briquette on a beach in a storm, and not necessarily in a good way. I don’t find this as good as Uigeadail, and certainly not worth the extra £15. It’s a good, strong, serious Islay malt but neat it’s a bit much for me, and lacks subtlety. A splash of water calms it down a bit, but I wouldn’t buy it again, whereas I could drink Uigeadail all day long.

    Nectar of the Gods

This scotch delivers in the nose and palate. Sweet fruity notes cuts through the smoky edge and delivers a warm and delightful infusion of French oak tannins and peat. My favorite Ardbeg expression.

    Smoked ginger bomb

Currently my favourite core range Ardbeg. Intense glacé ginger and orange peel nose, Bandaids, long peppery finish, smoke. So much to savour.
