Single malt from Ailsa Craig, founded in 2007 with a capacity of 12,000,000 litres on the same site as Girvan. Several styles of malt whisky are produced there, from sweet and light to heavier and more sulphury (two stills have steel condenser rather than copper) as well as peated styles up to 50ppm.
Custard and some phenolic ash, some Big Red too, becoming more chalky and cereal driven with subtle golden syrup. As the producer's notes state, bacon then emerges.
Undoubtedly meaty 'n' peaty. More of that chalky cereal (dry muesli?) and golden syrup with Big Red in support.
Sweet, smoky and drying. More Big Red with vanilla.
The Big Red (spicy cinnamon sweets) are an ever-present but never threaten to dominate this sweet peaty treat.
An absolute belter of a whisky! Powerful yet smooth, all sorts of flavours come to the fore, yet it is superbly balanced, with peat being very evident but not overwhelmingly. An expertly crafted malt, I love it!
Simply put, for the age of this whisky. It stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the best islay. The flavours a brilliantly balanced. Also, the bottle is beautifully crafted.
A good whisky but £50+? Seriously? £35-£40 yes. Peoples hard earned money should be spent elsewhere. I would recommend Springbank 10/Kilkerran 12 or Ledaig 10. All three better and £10-£15 cheaper. You're welcome.
Absolutely love this whisky! A real explosion of sweet/peaty flavour that keeps changing and developing. Highly recommend!
First impressions on the nose: smoked haddock according to my son, smoked kippers for me. We both love Ardbeg, and put this at least on a par. Can't recommend it enough.
