It's Aberlour's ever-popular A'Bunadh single malt Scotch whisky! Each batch of this single malt is matured entirely in Spanish oloroso sherry butts, bestowing huge helpings of dried fruit and festive spice notes to the whisky, after which it's bottled up at full-on cask strength with no chill-filtration.
Zesty notes of chocolate-coated orange wheels join sticky ginger loaf and sherried fruits.
Plump sultanas, prunes, cakey spice, and marmalade, with biscuity malt and toffee apple in tow.
Sweet spices and rich oak linger.
I tried this for the first time at the whisky museum in Edinburgh, and immediately dismissed everything else. I'm a whisky amateur, but the complex aromas and flavors, combined with its strength, had me hooked from the first sip.
I'm not super palate man or anything like that, but this tasted more like cognac than scotch to me. No complaints though, it's really nice, 4 and half.
I'm having this fantastic scotch as I'm writing this review. Powerful yet beautifully smooth for a single malt with 60% alcohol. Great sweetness with the right amount of bitterness. Almost feels like great quality Portuguese aged moonshine (aguardente). I taste dried figs or raisins. Very sweet aromas of dried fruits, vanilla, chocolate and a little orange. I like.
Aberlour is one of my two favorites Scotches. With The A'Bunadh being on top (love the 10&12 too). It is the perfect balance of orange, spice, sherry and oak. The raisins and cocoa are a nice finish. Watch out... Higher than normal alcohol proof! Drink it neat, and if you must, sip some decent h2o in between.
I have to say my favorite for several years now.
