Which Talisker will you choose?
The tale of Talisker
Talisker whisky, produced on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, is celebrated for its unique maritime character and bold, smoky flavours. Founded in 1830 by the MacAskill brothers, Talisker has become an iconic name in the world of single malt Scotch whiskies, revered for its adherence to traditional methods and the distinctive terroir of its island home.
Talisker's whisky-making process is rooted in tradition, from its mineral and peat-rich water source at Cnoc nan Speireag (Hawk Hill), to its peat-smoked barley and use of classic worm tub condensers. Its double distillation process in traditional copper pot stills includes a wash still with a unique lye pipe that imparts a touch of maritime saltiness, while its rugged coastal location does the rest during maturation.
The Talisker range includes a variety of expressions, each offering a unique taste experience while maintaining its character: the wild, untamed spirit of the Isle of Skye.
Talisker Port Ruighe
Talisker and Port casks are a match made in heaven, and that combination shines in Port Ruighe (also check out the Diageo Special Release edition from 2023 for further proof). Pronounced 'Port Ree', this single malt Scotch whisky was treated to a finish in fine Port wine casks, which imparts a rich new dimension to this Isle of Skye whisky.
Nose:
After a wave of initial sea spray, the nose becomes more complex with Crayola crayons, orange pith and a touch of white chocolate. Demerara and even sticking plaster emerge briefly, along with plummy umeshu notes.
Palate:
The initial characteristic is Talisker brine once again, but it is much sweeter than usual. Thick and mouth coating like the Storm with chilli and a little chocolate orange. Increasingly smoky - much smokier than the nose suggests.
Finish:
Milk chocolate becomes cocoa and oak with mocha notes and the faintest hint of that orange pith once again.
Talisker Storm
Among the smokiest whisky to be produced at the Isle of Skye distillery, Talisker Storm was aged in specifically selected refill and toasted American oak casks to let the spirit character shine. That profile is all about intensity, vibrant fruit and a roaring beach bonfire of smoke.
Nose:
Initial brine, but not as abrupt as the 10 Year Old, quite creamy by comparison. Banana. Banana angel delight? Window putty, a hint of sticking plasters, barbecue and citrus. White pepper develops towards the bottom of the glass.
Palate:
Thick and mouth-coating with wood smoke, brine, and some tin and chilli heat.
Finish:
Red chilli peppers and oak dryness with a hint of embers.
