Here we have Whyte & Mackay's answer to low ABV tipples. Whyte & Mackay Light is a spirit drink blends together Scotch whisky and sherry before it spent some time in both sherry casks and bourbon barrels. Weighing in at 21.5% ABV, it can be enjoyed over ice or in a longer serve with soda.
Notes of silky caramel, dried fruit and berries with a subtle hint of smoke.
First class
It's never going to compete with a fine single malt, but then it really isn't supposed to. It works great as a mixer and does a good job of introducing people to whisky drinks, especially if their palate isn't accustomed to strong bitter tastes. The substantially lower alcohol content is also nice for those who desire a larger drink without the consequences. Overall, if you want to sample rich flavours in a neat drink, this isn't for you, but if you want a smooth spirit to add to a soft drink it'll do just right.
It's never going to be a fair comparison to rate a 20% abv whisky alongside a standard one; alcohol is too important to the overall taste and texture. Until food science advances enough to make a convincing NA whisky, this has a very useful place at the bar for lower-alcohol cocktails. I have enjoyed this in low-abv Boulevardier variations, and in Manhattans/Rob Roys where I wanted an unusual vermouth to be the star. Also useful for when you want the ritual but not the full intoxicating power of a cocktail, like for a greeting-drink with your guests when you haven't really got dinner in hand yet, or to touch up after-dinner coffee when you've already had plenty to drink. I don't know of many (any?) other products on the market with an in-between-wine-and-spirits abv, that do the same flavour work that this does. That's worthwhile and I'm glad this is available, but it's a distinct product from actual whisky so expectations should be set accordingly.
Absolutely Rubbish. And for what it is definitely overpriced
Terrible tastes like petrol if you are going to blend whiskey with cherry you should use more aged whisky
