From the Lyre's folks over in Australia comes a non-alcoholic spirit that would make a great alternative to use in cocktails such as an Old Fashioned or Boulevardier. The brand is named after the Australian Lyrebird, which is renowned for being able to mimic the calls of other birds. Oh, and what's with the bear? The North American black bear was used as the logo for this particular expression as it's made in the style of bourbon. But there's no alcohol here, just to be clear.
Smooth caramel and a hint of oak with a slightly spicy finish.
I was hopeful this might be a decent mixer or on the rocks stand in for those days I didn't feel like the alcohol so I set my preconceptions aside and tried it. As my title says, it's basically the taste of watered, very watered, down maple syrup. I'll finish the bottle because I can't justify completely wasting my money but I'll never buy another Lyre beverage again, not if this is their impression of the "essence" of an American malt.
The smell and colour is very inviting but as someone else has said it tastes like water drunk out of a tainted dirty glass. I was hopeful that this would be a good alternative but alas some of the reviews are living in cloud cuckoo land. This will probably be only acceptable to help non alcoholic cocktails have a smell of whiskey. Very disappointed ?
For a non or low alcohol beverage my wife rates this as one of the best, I personally prefer the real thing but if you can’t drink alcoholic drinks then this is worth a try
Unbelievably bad. Like drinking the water you rinsed out a glass someone had been drinking Kahlúa from the night before. Nose isn't great but promising enough for a non-alcoholic alternative. Taste is extremely watery, sweet coffee notes and very, very thin to drink. If you are a whisky drinker you will feel ripped off. I was prepared for a different and massively inferior experience but this stuff is dreadful and came in under even my low expectations by some distance. I will agree with one reviewer, it probably tastes better in a mixer because then you are tasting the mixer and not this dreadful stuff.
Very nice drink, neat or with cola, can't fault it
