Australia
From the Lyre's folks over in Australia comes a non-alcoholic spirit that would make a great alternative to use in cocktails such as an Old Fashioned or Boulevardier. The brand is named after the Australian Lyrebird, which is renowned for being able to mimic the calls of other birds. Oh, and what's with the bear? The North American black bear was used as the logo for this particular expression as it's made in the style of bourbon. But there's no alcohol here, just to be clear.
Smooth caramel and a hint of oak with a slightly spicy finish.
Not the mouth feel of a proper drink, not the flavour, not the smell. I was expecting 1 or 2 of the 3. With a cola it's almost acceptable, but even then nowhere near expectations.
Flavourless
I like it. It gives some of the flavour and some of the bite of a bourbon. No its not like a malt scotch. I drink it neat and enjoy it. I have limited options as I have medical problems and this is without doubt the best non alcoholic whiskey out there. If I wasn't forced to drink non alcohol I probably would give a poorer review but as a hobnobs choice its the business.
Nothing pleasant
An interesting alcohol free version of Jack Daniels! Has a very weak caramel nose and lacks the viscosity of alcohol so no real mouthfeel to it. However, it has the flavour of american malt whiskey, albeit rather weak and watery. The finish is short but has a pleasant mild burn to it. It may be okay with a mild mixer but will be unnoticable with a flavoursome mixer such as Ginger wine.
