Distillery/Brand Lyre's

Lyre's American Malt

From the Lyre's folks over in Australia comes a non-alcoholic spirit that would make a great alternative to use in cocktails such as an Old Fashioned or Boulevardier. The brand is named after the Australian Lyrebird, which is renowned for being able to mimic the calls of other birds. Oh, and what's with the bear? The North American black bear was used as the logo for this particular expression as it's made in the style of bourbon. But there's no alcohol here, just to be clear.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Smooth caramel and a hint of oak with a slightly spicy finish.

Reviews for Lyre's Non-Alcoholic American Malt
Watered down maple syrup
I was hopeful this might be a decent mixer or on the rocks stand in for those days I didn't feel like the alcohol so I set my preconceptions aside and tried it. As my title says, it's basically the taste of watered, very watered, down maple syrup. I'll finish the bottle because I can't justify completely wasting my money but I'll never buy another Lyre beverage again, not if this is their impression of the "essence" of an American malt.

No no no
The smell and colour is very inviting but as someone else has said it tastes like water drunk out of a tainted dirty glass. I was hopeful that this would be a good alternative but alas some of the reviews are living in cloud cuckoo land. This will probably be only acceptable to help non alcoholic cocktails have a smell of whiskey.
Very disappointed 😞

Worth a try
For a non or low alcohol beverage my wife rates this as one of the best, I personally prefer the real thing but if you can’t drink alcoholic drinks then this is worth a try

Don't do it!
Unbelievably bad. Like drinking the water you rinsed out a glass someone had been drinking Kahlúa from the night before. Nose isn't great but promising enough for a non-alcoholic alternative. Taste is extremely watery, sweet coffee notes and very, very thin to drink. If you are a whisky drinker you will feel ripped off. I was prepared for a different and massively inferior experience but this stuff is dreadful and came in under even my low expectations by some distance. I will agree with one reviewer, it probably tastes better in a mixer because then you are tasting the mixer and not this dreadful stuff.

Excellent alternative for non-alcoholic bourbon based cocktails!
I've been sipping on a couple this evening for the first time and think it's excellent. Blends very well with a punchy ginger ale; it's rich, smokey caramel undertones elevate it to another level.

Admittedly, it's not something I might drink neat, but I don't think it's designed for that. (All the low review scores maybe don't get that about it?). Would recommend for whiskey cocktails!

Not to taste!
Like many others. My husband was not impressed! Not punchy enough!

Not to my taste
I didn’t like it. Too sweet and burnt tasting. Even coke couldn’t disguise that taste. Might go in more fancy cocktails, but not for me

Coffee dregs and white pepper
If you need a non alcoholic substitute for whiskey, you're better off with water. Couldn't give this away. No viscosity, no flavour, watery. The only 'kick' tastes like someone up ended a shaker of white pepper into it. No aroma, palate is like the pool of water that gathers at the bottom of your coffee machine
