While we wait for the Kingsbarns Distillery's whisky to mature, get a taste of their new make spirit! The plans for this new Scotch whisky distillery in Fife (rather near St. Andrews, with its world-famous golf course) were in place in 2009, though construction began in 2013. Peter Holroyd is at the helm as Master Distiller.
Quite fruity on the nose, with a waft floral air.
More fruit, particularly when tasted with water...

New make is raw, it's an acquired taste and not for everyone. As new makes go, this one is very easy on the nose, mostly fruty notes without too much ethanol for the ABV. The fruits follow to the palate with a nice oily mouth feel. I prefer Vit Hund but this is a nice drop (if you appreciate what it is).
I was interested to try the new make from a new distillery... I was surprised quite how unpleasant I found it. Maybe it's because I'm not used to the flavour profile of new make. Some online reviewers have said Kingsbarns new make tastes pleasant but to me it's like drinking cheap tequila from a rusty sick bucket. There are some hints of fruit and coconut on the nose if I waft the glass nearby but as I get closer it is all engulfed by a metallic, pungent chemical smell with a strong vomit note (Butyric acid?) I don't mean to p*ss on anyone's parade. It maybe that I'm just not used it new make or I'm overly sensitivity to some chemical in there but I find this spirit replusive. Fascinating to see how maturation transforms this into finished whisky. I'm genuinely interested to taste it.
Utterly repulsive beyond belief. I know that new make is an interesting experience at best, and there's a reason that whisky is aged. I've had newmake before, at both Talisker and Tobermory distilleries, so I had some idea what I was in for. I've also had Ugandan "whisky" similarly colourless and I'd guess similarly young. But man, this is repulsive. I actually gipped. This will be joining the Ballantyne's Christmas Reserve as the undrinkable bottle with one nip out of it, as a cautionary reminder on my whisky shelf. I bear this new distillery no ill will, even if I'm not rich or into golf ? I hope it does well, but I have to say I recoil at the memory of the taste of this spirit.
