Why we love Lowland Scotch whisky
Sometimes overlooked, the Lowlands is becoming something of a dark horse in the Scotch whisky scene, and its history dates back to the end of the 18th century when it was first defined.
Once home to over 100 distilleries, there are now 17 whisky distilleries with more in the pipeline – perhaps most excitingly, the resurrection of Rosebank, which closed in 1993.
Not forgetting the thriving grain whisky scene, with the likes of Cameronbridge keeping the whisky world flush with blending stock and single grain editions.
Attributes of Lowland whisky
The typically light flavour profile associated with the Lowlands is thanks to the use of coal rather than peat in the malting process. Historically, Lowland malts were widely used in blends, so distillers needed to produce a versatile spirit that differed from other regions.
What does Lowland whisky taste like?
The Lowland region is often associated with light, floral, and grassy malt, as well as the vanilla-rich delicacy of grain whisky.
