Why we love Campbeltown Scotch whisky
More of a locality than a region, Campbeltown has had its ups and downs. It became known as the Victorian ‘whisky capital of the world’ in the late 1800s, when there were 21 distilleries collectively producing almost 2 million gallons of spirit a year.
Some 17 distilleries closed throughout the 1920s and by the end of the decade, just one remained. But it didn’t end there! By 1934, Springbank and Glen Scotia had restarted production, and in 2004 Glengyle reopened – it’s these three distilleries that remain to this day and plans are in place for more to join them.

About Glen Scotia Distillery
One of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, Glen Scotia is also one of just three currently operating in Campbeltown (along with Springbank and Glengyle). It was founded in 1832 by Stewart, Galbraith and Co and sited to the north of the town.
As is the case with many Scotch whisky distilleries, Glen Scotia has had its ups and downs, founded when the Campbeltown region was a major hub of Scotch whisky production with 28 or so distilleries. It managed to survive despite closing in 1928, restarting production in 1933, and closing once more in 1984, reopening for good in 2000 when Loch Lomond Group took over.
