An exciting addition to the Mount Gay collection, and the first in what will become an annual series from the Barbados distillery. Here we have its first Single Estate rum! Produced from sugar cane grown solely on the Mount Gay estate in Barbados, and grown intentionally to make molasses for rum production, rather than for producing sugar, the 2023 edition comprises a blend of the 2016 and 2017 cane harvests. Fermented with a yeast strain unique to Mount Gay, the rum matured between six and seven years, before being bottled up at a satisfying 55% ABV.
Rich, dense layers of sweet molasses, sticky caramel, and crème brulée lead the way, with heaps of floral vanilla, and a touch of sugary funk and leather nestling beneath.
The palate boasts a superbly floral profile, with notes of honey and hibiscus, before big helpings of juicy guava and pear arrive. Leathery oak joins in time, with heaps of soft vanilla pod riding throughout.
A zesty touch of candied lemon joins a tickle of clove, with pink peppercorn creeping at the edges for the finish, while floral vanilla and buttery esters linger.
$31.07 - $51.43
This is - I think - one of the best and complex rums I’ve tasted. Flavours of pear, banana, vanilla, caramel and he is strong. I had a taster and I definitely order one when this is available in my home country.
Anyone a fan of mount gay will love this, absolutely bursting with molasses funk and everything you'd expect from a true Barbadian rum. For a younger bottling it would put any aged rum/whisky to shame. Would highly suggest checking out the Mount Gay short video on their website of the craftsmanship that went into this release. Almost considered buying a 2nd.
