The new edition of Havana Club's very popular Cuban Barrel Proof, Seleccion de Maestros is a superb rum, bottled at higher strength.
Burnt sugar, maple syrup, pecan Danishes, ginger, nutmeg and oak.
Lots of character and spicy complexity. Notes of chocolate oranges, espresso beans, cedar wood, cigar leaves, calves leather, musty woodsheds and crème caramel.
Hints of smoke and sugared peels, very fruity.
Discovered rum drinking in Cuba in 2018 and when visiting the Havana club tourist attraction in old town Havana I bought my first bottle of this one. There’s little to rival its depth and versatility however a lovely sipping rum.think the value for money great too.i treat myself to a Tributo which is the only rum to rival it that I’ve tried but £350 ish a bottle when I bought it.keep thinking is it boring to keep buying this but every time i try a new one I go back to this one.
I spend far too much money on quality Rums, but this one is well worth the money. Rich, very pleasant on the nose and very smooth (considering the strength). This might well take over as my all time favourite from Ron Zacapa 23. It's absolutely gorgeous.
Very dark gold in the glass, the nose on this higher proof rum is delightful. It's a powerful nose, and if you were blindfolded you could be forgiven for thinking this was a Cognac. There's a lovely all spice combined with shortbread, danish pastry, golden syrup and maple pancakes. In the mouth the spice develops, a little cinnamon, tobacco and pepper makes way for a deep mocha/espresso note, dark chocolate and coffee mix with a creamy sweetness like an Irish Coffee. The finish is warm and long, the maple sweetness remains with a slight tang of orange and cinnamon sticks. A delicious rum for sure, and a fantastic change from whisky.
I haven't delved into more expensive rums yet but this one is by far the best I have tried. Amazing in a cuba libre.
Sweet but not cloying, full of spice and smoke. The MoM notes nail it really, although I'd say there is a slightly herbal, menthol note on the finish after the fruit. There are rums I prefer but I'll commend Seleccion de Maestros for being a quality product and a shining example of what a premium rum should be (ie not a sugar syrup).
