El Dorado 21 Year Old Special Reserve

Made from rums of between 21 and 25 years of age, matured in 45 gallon oak casks, within six degrees of the equator in Guyana. El Dorado 21 was awarded a Gold at the International Rum Festival 2003 in Canada and a Silver at the 2003 International Wine and Spirit Competition in London. Most remarkably, this was the highest scoring rum ever to be tasted by the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Buttery, with chocolatey notes of Rolos behind it. Ripe banana and fruity Christmas cake. Hints of tobacco and sandalwood, leading into spent match smokiness.

    Palate

Sultanas, dates, blackcurrant and macadamia nuts. A touch of rosewater, too. The mid-palate brings dark chocolate and nutmeg too.

    Finish

It just keeps going! There's fried banana and handfuls of raisin notes right through to the end, with just a little hint of spicy cinnamon.

A perfect demerera rum. Great long lasting enjoyable finish.

For me, top of the brands range.

Unfortunately, contrary to the previous post, this is also full of added sugar (around 20-30g/litre, as opposed to the 12 and 15 which sit at around 35g/litre), but at least the less than the others right. The 15yr is richer as it contains a lot of the Port Mourant still (double wood pot still). Most of the 21yr comes from the Albion still (four-column Savalle still) so it's "less heavy". 15 and 21 are totally different rums, they just happen to be bottled under the brand of El Dorado, and given they contain different rums in different proportions it's not really fair to compare. Personally, for me, the 21 is less sweet and more complex...which makes it better.

Best out of El Dorado lineup

At least this one is not full of added sugar, so it is better than the 12yo or the 15yo or the 25yo. But as a demerara it could be much more intense.

    Age isn't everything????

Okay, firstly this isn't the greatest rum out there but it's definitely one of my favourite drinkers. Price for quality it's hard to beat. To say that the 15 and 12 are better is ridiculous, I wouldn't drink either.

    Rob Walston Jul 19, 2015

Reminds you that age isn't everything...

I would barely class this as a rum in the normal sense but a superior quality spirit. Complex and interesting but not rummy. 15 is better imo but a safer bet for all rum drinkers would be the 12. Cheaper too.
