A snazzy looking rum all the way from Venezuela, Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva is a molasses based rum that is distilled in copper pot stills and matured in whiskey barrels. Top stuff for sipping neat or over ice, but also a very good bottle to have on hand when rum cocktails are on the menu. If you're feeling particularly experimental, try using Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva in place of a whiskey in a Manhattan. It works excellently. This fab rum was awarded a Gold Medal at the International Sugar Cane Spirits Tasting Competition in Ybor City.
Aromatic with hints of sultanas, chocolate, Christmas cake and gingerbread. Offers up bananas and custard with time in the glass.
Cocoa and vanilla, huge notes of oaky spice, brandy, plums and pepper.
Sweet coffee, Demerara sugar and oak.
Too sweet -- and not in a good way. Drank it neat and it tasted like flat rum and coke. Really quite awful. Obviously has sugar and coloring added. The fact that it's only 40% alcohol doesn't help. Life is too short for bad spirits. This bottle will sit untouched in my bar.
I'm sorry to say this is not a (RUM) this is more like a brandy had a really horrible taste if you like Brandy that's the one you can go for i supposed i was not impressed
An excellent rum for sipping plain at room temperature, no ice, no water. I never had the urge to adulterate it in cocktails. It's complete in itself. A bit too sweet, maybe. Sugar added? Another thing, how long was it matured? There is no mention on the bottle I bought. One vendor mentioned 12 years, another, 8 years. Normally, this is a big point of pride. Not finding it on the bottle, as well as in the presentation here, throws a shadow of suspicion. Maybe what I drink is not the same rum that got the gold medal. Is it the one judged good enough for us "hoi polloi"?
Tried this while on holiday in St Lucia Xmas 2020,really liked this rum was a recommended accompaniment to a chocolate fondant dessert lovely caramel smell and taste nice smooth rum, just ordered a bottle
I’m not overly keen on this truth be told. Don’t get me wrong it’s not vile, by any stretch. I just believe it does not live up to all the hype that comes with it. The main reason for my negativity, is the fact that when drinking this, it reminds me of drinking Jack Daniels. It even smells like a cheap whiskey! Drank neat, it is velvety smooth with some sweetness, and the alcohol burn isn’t to harsh either, to be fair, which is all positive. But after experiencing the initial delights of Diplomático, your tastebuds are then assaulted by a strange smoky, woody aftertaste, which is not so positive, the part that reminds me of the JD. Diplomático can be enjoyed as a sipping rum for sure, but for me personally, I enjoyed this better when I mixed it with Coca-Cola. Then that oaky, whiskey aftertaste isn’t quite as dominant and of course, it becomes much sweeter.
