The first release from Scotland's Dark Matter Distillers is Dark Matter Spiced Rum - very exciting stuff! Created in Banchory by two brothers, Jim and John Ewen, Dark Matter Spiced Rum is a molasses-based rum that features full-bodied notes of long pepper, fresh ginger, green peppercorns and allspice.

Very nice spiced rum.Best drunk neat. I was told I wouldn't be able to buy this back in England. So promptly had a taster then brought a bottle. After checking online it's is widely available. If you don't like spiced rum don't buy
Great stuff, really fine. It's like drinking a bottled mince pie. What's not to love about that?
Definitely not a rum that you use any mixer with or really any ice. I tried it with coke and then with ice and just spoils the taste. It is certainly different to most spiced rums and has a fair hint of ginger as an after taste. I had it with a few friends as a warmer playing golf in the rain and it certainly hit the spot. Unfortunately i did not bring a big enough hip flask as it went down like a helium balloon!!
We were really excited to try Dark Matter - so excited we set up an evening with friends with varied spiced rums. We left Dark Matter until a little later in the evening and mixed in some commercial rums like Redleg, Kraken and Sailor Jerrys. Well, I can tell you that Dark Matter blew us away. Literally. The spice was so overpowering, we couldn't finish a glass. We tried mixing it with some Pepsi and then with some Ginger Ale and it only got worse. In fact, even an Angostura 1919 couldn't wash away the taste and we ended the night. Disappointed. So disappointed.
A rum that changes flavour as it draws warmth from your hand. Becomes so much smoother and richer. No mixer, no ice. At first it tastes like cloves firing on your tongue and palate .. then you realise it's a super-concentrated ginger. For a 'single-note' flavour, it's quite complex. Will buy again.
