The first release from Scotland's Dark Matter Distillers is Dark Matter Spiced Rum - very exciting stuff! Created in Banchory by two brothers, Jim and John Ewen, Dark Matter Spiced Rum is a molasses-based rum that features full-bodied notes of long pepper, fresh ginger, green peppercorns and allspice.
This rum is like marmite - it’s divisive. This is definitely NOT a rum for people who are staunch traditionalists - who believe “spiced” is a six letter word never to be associated with rum. However. If you do not have a closed mind and are willing to subject your palette to new adventures in taste (and enjoy a spice explosion), then look no further. It is definitely different, but not for the sake of it. Let it breathe for an hour before sipping, and the incredible complexity becomes clearer, the ginger and allspice prevalent and warming, the lingering pepper notes leaving your taste buds craving more. Could I drink this every day? No. It is a little sweet for me - not sickly but I prefer a slightly smokier rum for that. But it is one that will have a permanent place on my rum shelf - and I loathe marmite with a passion.
I've been drinking rum for a long time. This absolutely disgusting vile Benylin medicine tasting foul offensive liquid is NOT RUM! It would strip the worst toilet of any stains! It's absolutely horrible! Un-drinkable!
Very unusual, exotic, oriental taste.
I like ginger. I really like ginger. I can sit there and happily work my way through a bag of crystallized ginger. As I said: I really like ginger. I was introduced to this rum on a night our with friends mixed with Ginger Ale it is divine! Others who have given it low scored I suspect are looking for a more subtle drink, which it isn't ant the idea of drinking it neat doesn't appeal yo me either (neither would any rum). With a mixer, however, it becomes a firey little slice of fried gold.
The barman insisted on me trying this rum as I like really dark, rich rums. I put up a fight as “normal” spiced rums are too sweet for me. One sip and I was turned forever! Now my favourite rum (alongside Woods). He served it a third rum, 2 thirds coke with a big slice of orange. Devine.
