The first release from Scotland's Dark Matter Distillers is Dark Matter Spiced Rum - very exciting stuff! Created in Banchory by two brothers, Jim and John Ewen, Dark Matter Spiced Rum is a molasses-based rum that features full-bodied notes of long pepper, fresh ginger, green peppercorns and allspice.

I've been an avid rum drinker for years and I enjoy trying new things, so I've had my eye on Dark Matter. I was delightfully surprised when I was given it as a gift this Christmas. I'm not typically the type to drink things straight, usually the alcohol overpowers the subtle taste for me, but when I opened the bottle and took a sniff I couldn't help but pour a tipple into a glass and have a sip. What a revelation - it's got a complex sweetness and a delightfully enjoyable spice that changes on your palate. I never thought I'd find something so delicious that I'd want to roll around my tongue first, absolutely incredible! The heat mellows out and the spicey notes linger. Ladies and Gentlemen - I consider this the best rum I've ever had and I don't say that lightly. It's exceptional neat; smooth and lightly smoky from the intense spice, it's wonderful mixed, if you try it with something fizzy the bubbles add to the experience. It's brought a playfullness to rum that I had no idea was lacking. I'm excited to try it with different things, some are saying to have it with lime and I truly reccomend it, I've yet to try it with ginger ale but I certainly will! If you have the chance, and can handle the heat, try it. You won't regret this phenominal Scottish beauty.
A fantastic surprise Xmas present this spiced rum is fantastic like someone has posted you will love it or hate it me fab for shot on a cold night.
It is an odd one that is for sure. The initial splash of flavour is an odd sensation. I think the aftertaste is alot nicer than the initial wash of flavour. Try with a mixer to relax the initial hit and it really is quite nice.
The aftertaste on this rum is incredibly odd and, for me personally, distasteful. I don’t mind cloves, but it lasts too long on the palette for me. I can see why another poster has called it the Marmite of spiced rum. I’m sure there are people that will love this bold rum, but for me it lacks subtlety.
