Here we have a higher strength bottling of the Original expression from Bumbu, now bottled at 40% ABV! The aged Caribbean rum has had native spices added to it, inspired by 16th and 17th century recipes used by West Indian sailors. With tropical fruit and spices at the fore, a splash of ginger beer would do well to bring out those warmer notes.
Banoffee pie, oak spice and caramel, with touches of chocolate and allspice.
So I’ve seen this rum in my local supermarket for awhile now and always been put off the price tag, however the other day I managed to win it in a competition and it’s blown me away. I get a lot of vanilla and caramel notes coming through which would fully explain the sweetness. It pairs perfectly with Fever-trees Madagascan Cola. It’s very similar to RedLeg spiced rum in terms of the vanilla notes so if you’re a fan of that you’ll love this!
To me this has a slight nutty smell, which I do like, so off to a good start. Neat it’s a tad on the rough side, but to counter act that burning sensation, there is plenty of sweetness going on (some argue too much) giving this rum a nice yin and yang balance. With Coca-Cola any unpleasantness evaporates leaving you to enjoy a rum packed with plenty of flavours. Now here is my problem. The majority of people say the predominant flavour coming through is banana. Me, I’m not so sure, because from my first impressions, I thought I could taste hazelnut. Then some people have said they can taste caramel and others have said they taste vanilla. So it comes as no surprise to me that I can not definitively say what this rum actually tastes off. I’ll have to let you work that out for yourselves.
