A richly flavoursome rum from the Philippines, inspired by the story of Papa Isio, who played a big part in the late-19th century Philippine revolution. The rum itself is made using sugar cane grown on the island of Negros in the Philippines and matured in oak barrels before its blended and bottled.
Fruity notes up front, with sweet tangerines and apricots. This is followed by vanilla ice-cream, drizzled with runny toffee sauce.
Bags-full of vanilla and cinnamon. Hints of raisin, sultana and marmalade.
Medium length with punchy cinnamon.
Rather exciting stuff.
An average rum in my opinion. It’s nothing special, but by the same token it’s not as bad as some would have you believe. Drank neat, you get an instant hit of sweetness, but not so that it overpowers the rum,(could do with it being sweeter if anything.) The alcohol burn isn’t to harsh to be fair, making this rum drinkable neat. For me though, I prefer to have Don Papa mixed with Coca-Cola, just because it makes it a tad sweeter and calms down the alcoburn it does possess. Having said that, mixed with coke, Don Papa ends up developing a weird aftertaste, almost liquorice like, which doesn’t seem to be present when drank neat.
Very smooth and flavoursome
YUK! Tastes like cream soda with a slight rum topping, cloying in the mouth and repeating continuously after, even the next day. Its a bit like eating a massive bag of sweets and feeling, well, blurrrgh afterwards. Could have been one of the punishments at Willy-Wonka's. Distilled in a place called Sugarlandia (I kid not) it has a massive sugar reading, which makes a mockery of any claimed age statement or barrel time - its all conveniently hidden by adding enough sugar to happily retire every dentist and put the rest into a diabetic coma... (Great packaging though).
I am a whisky, whiskey and bourbon connoisseur, that recently went to my whisky spot to get myself a bottle of Woodford Reserve, my go to bourbon. But they were all out of stock. So I looked for an alternative. Something with some sweetness to it, like a good bourbon has. That's when my guy proposed I could try a nice rum for a change. At first a little hesitant, he assured me I would like the bottle he suggested. Considering he absolutely knows what I like, I gave it a shot and took a bottle of Don Papa home. I absolutely loved it. It is sweet, but not too sweet. The vanilla jumps into your nose when you open the bottle and the smooth mandarin/vanilla flavour with a dash of toffee are a joy to the taste buds. The Don Papa sure is a bottle I'll return to. Specially during the summertime. It's also very nice with a couple of ice cubes. Ideal for a drink under the sun.
As a Filipino, I can tell you everything in the Philippines us on the sweet side so I expected this to be the same. I loved the sweetness and depth of flavour.
