What is organic whisky?
Organic whisky ensures that the use of pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals in the production of the grains and other ingredients used in the whisky is regulated and minimised.
How is organic whisky made?
To make organic whisky, it’s not just the barley which must be organic – the casks used to mature the whisky must also be organic, meaning that if they held non-organic produce before (like wine, sherry, etc.) then they’ll need to be scraped and charred to ensure the spirit doesn’t come into contact with any non-organic material. Of course using organic virgin oak is the easiest way to solve this problem!
Organic Certified Scotch
“ Sustainability and high quality ingredients have always been central to our philosophy at Nc’nean. These two combine in our sourcing of 100% organic, Scottish barley.
We chose to source organic barley, in spite of its high price point, because of the huge improvements to biodiversity and carbon sequestration it brings on the farms where it is grown. But in addition to those benefits, the higher complexity of the grains themselves bring a delicious buttery texture to our whisky.”
- Annabel Thomas, CEO - Nc'nean Distillery
