Macallan - The Red Collection
The oldest ever whisky releases from the Macallan
The Macallan Red Collection showcases the distillery's long, storied legacy, as well as its respect for tradition and craftsmanship. Few distilleries have as extensive stocks reaching far into the days of yore and yonder as The Macallan, and this series of astonishing single malts offers a glimpse into the past, featuring a host of well-matured whiskies that includes the oldest bottlings ever released by the distillery.
History
The name represents a theme running throughout The Macallan's history, going back to its founder, Alexander Reid, whose surname means 'the red one'. Later on, in 1903, The Macallan launched its Choice Old range, which would be shipped in cases with red print, signalling the well-aged whisky within, separating it from the existing expressions, which would have black ink. Later still, in 1980, the distillery released its oldest vintage to date at the time, The Macallan 40 Year Old, with a red ribbon tied around the covetable bottles. And now, The Red Collection brings the distinctive colour to the fore once again.
The Macallan 40 Year Old
One of three ongoing expressions from The Red Collection, this single malt has spent four decades maturing, developing a flavour profile where notes of "lively citrus combine with dark chocolate, antique oak, and warming wood spice", says master whisky maker Kirsteen Campbell.
The Macallan 50 Year Old
Another incredible ongoing expression from The Red Collection, this Macallan single malt has aged for 50 years before being bottled. Half a century of rest, resulting in a whisky that features "dried fruit and wood spice, before giving way to dates and dark chocolate, orange oil and a hint of sultanas", says master whisky maker Kirsteen Campbell.
The Macallan 78 Year Old
The oldest ever release from The Macallan to date. This is a 78 year old single malt Scotch whisky, which has slumbered soundly for over three quarters of a century. An astounding expression from the distillery, boasting aromas of "apple, peach and grape" alongside notes of "antique leather and rich vanilla essence", says lead whisky maker Sarah Burgess.

More about The Macallan whisky distillery
In 1824, the Macallan distillery was licensed to Alexander Reid, but under a different name; it started life as Elchies Distillery. Macallan sits in close proximity to a ford across the river Spey, the site originally held a farm distillery, which was frequented by cattle drovers crossing the ford. The distillery was expanded toward the end of the nineteenth century and renamed Macallan-Glenlivet and in 1980 the 'Glenlivet' suffix was removed.
