The Glenlivet 55 Year Old
A rare chance to own something remarkable
An astonishing new whisky will hit our virtual shelves soon: The Glenlivet 55 Year Old.
It’s the first instalment in a new series called The Glenlivet Eternal Collection. The range will eventually comprise five editions, created to encapsulate the history and heart of the distillery through some of its oldest-ever releases.
The Glenlivet 55 Year Old is the oldest official distillery bottling to date and only 100 bottles have been produced in total. Of that, just 92 will be released globally.
We are lucky to have gotten our hands on allocation and we think the only fair thing to do, given how old and rare this whisky is, will be to give you a chance to register your interest in buying a bottle before it goes on sale.
Glenlivet 55
This 55-year-old single malt was aged in a sherry cask for over half a century, imbuing it with a complex array of rich and rewarding flavours. The presentation has to match the quality of the liquid so the computational architect and artist Michael Hamsmeyer was enlisted to create something special.
The glass decanter is decorated with rose gold plating and enamel, and there's an artistic glorifier designed to display the bottle, creating a showpiece that looks almost sculptural and a glass plinth to support the bottle within the glorifier. Accompanying the bottle is a booklet with information and a certificate of authentication, signed by both the Glenlivet cask master and Hansmeyer.
Tasting Notes
Palate:
On the palate, the whisky releases deep and warming flavours of homemade blackcurrant jam, vanilla fudge and dark chocolate; balanced with zesty orange and crystalized ginger before closing with a touch of warming clove spice.
Nose:
The nose is met with the warmth of Autumn fruits; a gentle sweetness of poached pears is harmonised by heady citrus notes of ripe, sun-drenched Seville oranges, whilst a deeper note of sticky dates grounds the trio.
These are matched in the deep warmth of toasted hazelnut and the indulgent richness of dark chocolate, finishing with the enveloping, spiced warmth of cinnamon and nutmeg.
Finish:
Incredibly long, the finish is distinct and complex; evolving through fruit and spices to culminate with a subtle warming dry and spicy finish.
