Very Old Tom Bottling Note

OK, so, the Very Old Tom from That Boutique-y Gin Company is impressive and all - it's made with a medley of spirits (some unaged, some aged and some very well-aged) mixed together to form the base, then combined with juniper, coriander, angelica, bitter orange and liquorice along side a touch of cane sugar for classic Old Tom sweetness. However, there's another very striking feature of this gin, and it's the rather smug looking cat upon the label. It's hanging out in a parlour, wearing loafers made of the softest Italian leather and a tuxedo, enjoying a glass of Very Old Tom over ice. A very cool cat.

Batch 1 is a release of 1562 bottles.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Creamy lemon, resinous pine leading to a light touch of oak-y smoke and cherry blossom. A waft of exotic fruit.

Palate: Nutmeg and sugary spearmint. Flamed orange peel. Earthy juniper sits at the core, with charred oak and rum-like sweetness.

Finish: Light cardamom spiciness, with anise and caramel in support.

Very Old Tom (That Boutique-y Gin Company) Reviews

Gin but with flavour!

I do laugh at most f these reviews - because this tastes of something they give 1 star. I do agree that it may appeal more to those who enjoy whisky/rum though - this isn't a London gin, and it doesn't taste of pure juniper. I found it very unique and extremely drinkable. On my third bottle!

Don't go in expecting a London dry gin

Got this to try in some old-timey cocktails. Everyone should know that it is very much NOT a dry gin, and isn't supposed to be. Back in the 1800s, Old Tom was one of the more popular styles before being displaced by London and Plymouth dry gins. It's much sweeter and, well, whiskier, than the vast majority of gins on the market today.

Makes a very tasty turf club cocktail, and is nice even to sip neat.

Not a gin for gin lovers

A very strong whisky taste and smell. Not sure what I was expecting, but I’m not a whisky fan and couldn’t face more than a couple of sips. Maybe it would go better without tonic but I can’t bring myself to spend any more time on it when there’s many other gins I actually like.

As noted, not for gin-only lovers

Very much more along the dark spirit route. If you like whisk(e)y or aged rum I’m sure you’d love it, but if you’re only a clear spirit drinker then you likely won’t. Not a fan of much outside of gin/tequila/wine so really can’t comment on how this compares to other aged spirits as it’s simply not my thing.

Not for the regular gin lover...

I bought this not being sure what to expect but was half price on offer, so why not! Tried it neat, sippable but very strong hit of liquoric/anise which isn’t to my taste, definitely got a citrus hot in their too. Couldn’t finish the the glass I’d poured myself, so tried with tonic and would not recommend that route.... currently looking into cocktails that may suit this. Not to my taste but very sure it will be loved by others.

Tastes like whisky

I was expecting it to be a gin but it tastes more like whisky. It is quite spicy which is quite nice but there is a strong whisky taste. I’ve only tried in tonic so far and didn’t like it, it’s really strong. I may fair better if I try it with coke. Definitely not gin like at all.

Insanely complex

Incredibly delicious. Doesn't even need tonic - this is one to drink on its own.

I have never tasted anything like this before - I dont know how they done it, but its just insane. Its like a pudding gin.
